This dataset allows a detailed evaluation of nerve fiber populations that are crucial for the successful development of neuromodulation strategies used to repair a CNS/PNS injury or disease. Rat abdominal vagus nerve were embedded in plastic resin after perfusion and post fixation in 2% paraformaldehyde, 1.25% glutaraldehyde solution diluted in 0.1M PBS followed by cross sections that were stained with 1% toluidine blue.  The parameters investigated were: number of myelinated fibers; spatial distribution of myelinated fibers within the nerve structure; number of fascicles within the nerve; number of Schwann cell nuclei; number of blood vessels; area of fascicle; area of blood vessels; percentage of blood vessels and Schwann cell nuclei that occupies the fascicles; and morphometric analysis (myelinated fiber diameter; axon diameter; myelin thickness; and g-ratio). The histological images were captured with a Nikon® camera and the NIS Elements software and uploaded in .jp2 and .tiff formats. There are images of an overview of the entire nerve (10X), 100X magnification images, and a montage of the entire nerve in a higher magnification (100X) for both fascicles 1 and 2 for each animal (n=3), totaling 5.36GB of images."}}
